What tests should a woman ask her doctor about?

Cervical cancer occurs in the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. If the cancer is found and treated early, the chances of death from cervical cancer decrease. There are many things that increase the risk of cervical cancer. Sexual behavior such as having had sex with different partners, and if your partners have had relations with different partners is a risk. Also, having sexually transmitted diseases increases your risk. But women have also been diagnosed with cervical cancers that have no risk factors.

What can you do?
Have regular screenings called pap tests (pap smears). This test finds abnormal cells which are cancer or could become cancer. If the pap test is abnormal the doctor will treat the abnormal area. Your health care provider will decide how often you need to have the pap test done based on your personal history.
